My MIL is like this. Like PPs, she is doing it to fill silence. It is awkward for me because my FIL, SIL, and DH will often just ignore it and I am stuck there listening and answering the awkward questions and conversations.

OP, my FIL asks those questions, even asking me where did I buy a dress. If they want to start a conversation, there are many other ways to do it.

I think it's fine to vent a little about inane chatter. OP isn't telling MIL to shut it, she is politely answering questions and then harmlessly complaining here.

I, too, have a hard time with people who simply can't enjoy a bit of companionable silence. I know people who will read every sign during a car ride just to say something. "No turn on red." Thanks so much for that valuable addition to the conversation.
