happens to me sometimes at the P street whole foods. but the worst offender in my opinion is the Target in Columbia Heights. Literally 90% of the time they overcharge me and it's usually on a more expensive item, like a $12 bottle of detergent.

Yes, you need to read up on what the Better Business Bureau really is. Honestly, not much more than Yelp that will send a form letter on your behalf. Unlike Yelp it admits that it does take "advertising/membership" money from businesses & it positively impacts the ratings BBB gives to businesses.

How would the clerks keep track of this in high volume stores? I mean I guess they could, but after hundreds of interactions, it would be hard.

If I buy 2 oranges, the cashier can charge me for 5, then later go out 3 in her purse. This of course works more easily with smaller, expensive items. Happened all the time when I worked in a grocery in high school. Allows employee theft long term by not flagging that the store has an unusually large amount of items go missing.

But how can the cashier benefit from the extra swipes?

PP I 100% disagree with you. No way is what OP describes, "negligence". Charging for milk that doesn't exist, and charging for 7x's the amount of oranges than what OP was actually purchasing. that's done on purpose and t's fraud.

I am someone who has had lots of problems with WF, but is this fraud? Do you think the clerks are trained to charge for 14 oranges instead of 2? I tend to think it is negligence. WF in NY did have a problem with systemic fraud, but that was underfilling prefilled containers. They were fined for that.

In Maryland you could report this to the Consumer Protection department with the Maryland Attorney General's office.

I keep a running tally in my head while I shop. My mom does it on her list. We would never swipe our cards for a total that was $10-15 more than expected.

Only problem I have at WF is that sometimes a bag of oranges has 1-2 soft, almost rotten ones and I have to return them.

Scanner fraud is common in many big businesses.

OP is misusing "fraudulent" here.

I don't understand... The cashier gets no benefit from overcharging - it's not like they are gleaning the extra profit-

It seems highly implausible that WF would instruct employees go do this on their behalf, Amanda even more unlikely they would go along with it.

It's got to be an issue with the equipment... I guess that could be intentional?
