I'm faily certain you can buy data out of the pay as you go plans.. But you can't hide the purchase from mom.

We also have the tmobile pay as you go - $3/month for 30 minutes or texts. If you go over it's .10/min or text. Data only on wifi and we can restrict time via app.

I have an I-phone with no data plan. I just use it to make phone calls or text. And when I have wifi I can go on the Internat. It's much cheaper this way (I use a T-mobile pre-paid phone card for $100 for 1000 minutes and when I run out I buy another card).
Sometimes it's a pain if there's no wifi around and I want to look up something, but nowadays there is wifi so many places, that I can just pop into McDonald's or Panera if I'm out and need to look up something.
It definitely keeps the costs down of having a phone. My kids have the same setup as I don't think they need a $40 per month phone plan.
