I'm eager for any updates from current families about whether this is a viable option beyond preK. Are more in-bounds families going there?

It used to, but less OOB kids are getting into schools that used to be easier to get into OOBs, which accelerates this for Payne and Miner compared to Brent and Maury.
Might accelerate. But people still bail early - by first. Will take 7-8 years before they stay through 5th.

I don't remember the number for Payne. I think that the schools are definitely on the uptick. Both the Miner and Payne district is one of the nicest on Capitol Hill, with lots of young families. I put both schools on my lottery list, but lucked into a ECE spot at my inbounds. That said, I don't know how I would feel after 1st. Probably I would be fine.

personally I would consider the lack of a PTA to be a benefit, but that's just me ...

Communication and organization has been noticeably better than last year and there is just something exciting in the air at Payne this year. Yes there is a PTA. Its in the building phase but there are lots of active and engaged parents and teachers. I'm sure that it will continue to grow. There is not a lot of diversity in the upper grades. My guess is that will be changing slowly year to year. It seems most of the neighborhood PK3 families from last year stayed for PK4 and many of the neighborhood Pk4 families stayed for K. I think this trend will continue and you will slowly see neighborhood families stay longer and longer. A word of caution there was a significant IB waitlist this year for PK3. I think most IB families eventually got offered a spot but I know many OOB siblings did not.
OK, but come on. There's not a lot of diversity in the lower grades. There's only diversity in PreS and PreK! Let's get real; Payne is around a decade behind Brent, and 7 or 8 years behind Maury. Almost every IB family at Payne is going to play the lottery for many years to come.
