We will probably have them "fix" it and take the $5K. Ours is a 2010. My oldest is almost driving age, so this is a perfect car for her to "learn" on. And if it gets damaged, eh, at this point it has no value anyway. We'll add the $5K to savings to get a new vehicle.

I applied for the buyback and will get $20k+. I'm afraid if I wait, the money will run out. Besides, my bb value is $9k. I just don't want to drive it any more, though I probably would if I lived in a less-dense area. Yes, I understand they will probably ship it to India, so it will be polluting there.

Not really, no. We drive our cars into the ground, so we've never really figured we'd get much of anything on resale. When our last car bit the dust (at 15 y/o), we donated it.

You will be required to get the s/w fix to get an emissions inspection. The fix will kill mileage and performance - which is why they cheated in the first place. You are much better getting out it while the offer is available.

Well, yes. In my original post I said we were going to wait and see exactly what the fix does to mileage and performance before making a final decision. If it tanks it, then yeah, we will do the buyback. But I think the fix hasn't been fully worked out yet so no final decision yet. And the buyback goes until 2018, right? But resale is not one of our concerns.

The entire settlement won't be taxable, but some portion might be. My guess, not being a tax person, is that it is only the "extra" money that might be taxable. For example, VW has calculated that my car is worth 15K, but they will give me 20K for it. I would guess only the 5K might be taxable.

Will the entire settlement amount be taxable? Or just the difference between the original purchase price and the settlement amount?

You mean your wife sold her car and received a fair price for it and now you want free money even though you were damaged in no way? No, sorry. Doesn't work that way.

We're leaning towards buyback. We'll probably just buy a petrol Golf instead of the TDI, unless there is a new one.

I'm selling mine back for a few reasons:

1) The buyback price doesn't take into consideration the condition of the car. My car has a dent, a bunch of scratches, plus the kids were really tough on it and the interior is really beat up.

2) When I bought this car, gas was over $4 a gallon. Now with gas so low, a high MPG car doesn't really save me much money and the fix will only make MPG and power worse.

3) I've had a lot of issues with my car in the 5 years that I've owned it and the extended warranty is just about up. This is a good reason to get rid of it since there are lots of expensive services coming up and potential repairs. Plus the AC is going bad and I don't want to pay to fix it.
