Why? Who cares if they swing lol

+1. My child loves the swings. I wish she didn't. I wish she'd run around the playground and wear herself out rather than just wearing out my arms pushing her!

I have a friend who always says this. "We came here for YOU to exercise and play, not for you to sit while I get an arm workout."

This is so sad to me. I love pushing my kids and chatting and hearing them laugh.

My kids don't chat on the swing. They say "faster!" "Too fast!" "No no a little faster!" Etc. No need to be sad though. We spend lots of time together chatting and laughing, but when we are at the playground I like for them to get some energy out. I play with them, help them on equipment, but we didn't come to the playground for them to sit around.

Am I your friend? Does your friend also whine about how the swings are always in the sun and why doesn't the child want to play in that lovely shaded area over there?

Dd was good in a normal swing at that age. Just be very gentle.

2. Can he get on it? If not, maybe just put him on your lap to swing. Can you manage that safely?

Most definitely cannot get on it. Lap doesn't work. Can't hold him and hold the swings at same time.

Have him face you and wrap his arms around you.

If he can't manage to hold on to you, he's not going to be trustworthy to hold on to the swing.

Around 2, but definitely matters the kid, how high, and ground covering. My DD did fall off once.

My 20 mo can swing on a low swing VERY gently.

So put some limits on it. "We can either do swinging for 5 minutes at the beginning or right before we go home. Which do you want?

"I'll put the timer on and when it goes off in 5 minutes (let the timer be the bad guy, not you) it's time to play something else (or go home if the choice was at the end).

Then follow through. And, yes, that might mean your child is in a puddle on the ground (moved safely from below the swings) for a few minutes while you move away. But he/she will get over it and go do something else.
