I am a parent of a freshman at Blyth-Templeton Academy on Capitol Hill. My DS loves the school, and DH and I have been impressed by the school's commitment to helping students succeed. It's a challenging school but set up so that students have an opportunity to do a lot of work on campus. (There's still homework, but it seems reasonable.) This is NOT the school for students looking for the big football/marching band/cheerleading experience. But for independent, committed students willing to contribute to class discussions, etc., it has a lot to offer. The students seem nice and supportive to each other. A lot seem to "march to their own drummers." It's a nice mix. The entire student body will be capped at 100, and class sizes average 8. For a private school, the tuition is not bad (more in line with Catholic schools than Field, Burke, etc.) If people want to check it out, the school is having an open house at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016. I'm going to try to make it to offer a parent's perspective.

Yes, they only have two classes, but the last period is a study hall. They cannot leave early.

They can if you allow them to.

Accreditation is overrated. Colleges are becoming more and more indifferent to it, especially a place like Blyth-Templeton which seems to have one of the city's most challenging HS courses of study. Do not at all consider this in your search.

I've visited and talked with students. It seems like a great option, particularly for kids who will thrive with the block schedule (two courses per trimester) but this is a wild overstatement.

It's at 9th & Penn SE.
