Yes, you do take your hat off.
you don't have to.
Of course, you don't have to but there is a protocol on how to act, stand, behave, etc...

Gabby Douglas seems off this Olympics.
They panned over to the 3 other team members when Simone won. Laurie ans Madison were jumoing up and down screaming and cheering. Gabby was just sitting there and half heartedly clapping.
I hate to say sour grapes, but she definitely appears to have her mind someplace else.
She might have more going on than we know about.

The etiquette is spelled out in Title 36 Subtitle 1, Para. 301 of the US Code:
(a)Designation.—The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
(b)Conduct During Playing.—During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1) when the flag is displayed—
(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and
(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.
But they don't have to. That's what makes America great, please don't forget that. It is what makes us better, ironically.

I thought Gabby was fine. I'm a little tired of Michael Phelps wagging his finger at other competitors - he is one of a kind, but that's not very sportsmanlike.
