My SIL likes to dump my niece and nephew on whoever is closest. At one point she didn't ask, she just started making plans that didn't include her kids. DH and I had planned to be around at the same time, and she just assumed we would watch them. We didn't step in and offer to look after the kids.

My nephew finally asked who was going to look after them while Mom and Dad were busy. We said nothing. Finally, BIL joked "nobody.. you guys will look after yourselves."

DH and I showed up hours after SIL wanted to be off doing her own thing. Her plan didn't work.

OP it sounds as if your family isn't overly welcoming to her/her kids. If she continually pulls that kind of crap I can see why.

They gave her a chance and reasonably obliged her to help her out. Realized this was a pattern and that she takes advantage. Upon realizing that, OP spoke up and said no. It all seems very reasonable to me. It would be weird for them to say no from the beginning. That would've made them jerks.

Not OP but this line doesn't work with people like her. I was burned the same way by IL's several times in a row. One hour turned into 6 hours every single time. After that, I declined any invitation to babysit.
