I didn't vote during college because I went away for school and didn't think about absentee ballots until it was too late (and barely paid attention to the news).

I'm the quoted poster. I also skipped a few years of voting during college, same reason. The logistics can be weird at first. Besides, is the way people on this thread have treated OP the way we would be proud to see our teen or young adult children interacting with others online? If not... hmm.

I assume OP is a college freshman who is used to having the day off school for Election Day, because the schools are used as polling places.

OP, you will have plenty of time to vote and still take your exam. If you will be voting absentee, you should take the time now to check on how to receive an absentee ballot and when you need to mail it in by. Or you may be eligible to vote early, depending on where you live.

No, I don't think if you e-mailed him now he would change it. I do think he would conclude you are an entitled snowflake, however.

If it's your first time voting I can see why you might be concerned. However, this exam will not logistically prevent you from voting, and it is therefore perfectly reasonable that the exam be scheduled for election day.

Most people have to work on election day, and employers may or may not be required to give time off. Some employers will give 1-1.5 hours off to employees working a 10+ hour shift, but I have never heard of time off work for employees on a standard 8 hour shift to vote. And no college exam is likely to take anywhere near 8 hours. Even a dissertation defense wouldn't usually run that long.

Polls are open long hours, and you will have the chance to vote before and/or after the exam.

If due to the rest of your class schedule you cannot get to the polls at any time other than during the scheduled exam, you would have the option to do early/absentee voting. If you need to take advantage of that option and would like assistance in figuring out how to do so, please post back and with the state in which you will be voting, and I would be happy to point you to the applicable information.

I am finalizing my syllabus for my Tuesday course right now. It wouldn't even occur to me to not schedule something important on Election Day! Perhaps now I will mention that I expect class to function as normal on the week before after.

Ohhh hon, just go ahead and beg your professor for some extra credit assignment because that excuse will not work.
