I rented a car, drove to Coba for the day from Playa del Carmen. No issues at all. Climbing the pyramid at Coba is absolutely awesome!
We stopped at the Grand Cenote on the way back, which was pretty darn cool, too. There's a lot of cenotes, so I can't really speak to the others.

I am 21:55. We were hyper aware of the laws and did not speed. Prior to this we always rented and never had a problem, we feel like the police really started zeroing in on tourists about 2-3 years ago.
If pulled over, would flashing a maroon official US passport help the situation? Or terrible idea?
Good luck with that. If you're on official government business as such a passport suggests then you should would not be driving yourself around and Mexican police know that. Go ahead and put big US flags on the hood of your car too.
