We have the same set up. No one could see anything unless they were very close to the door and then we could see them. We also live on a small cul-de-sac in the suburbs, so there isn't a lot of foot traffic. Don't think I would have wanted this in the city do to privacy and safety concerns.

Yeah! sunlight is essential to come inside the home. There are many different types of glass doors, which you can navigate here , satisfies all the criteria by providing safety and security as well as providing the best protection against UV fading.

Our house (a flip) has a door with full-length glass. I love it for the light it lets in. We're going to put up a window film that will give the glass the appearance of frosted glass -- so it will still let in light but also address privacy concerns (and it is removable so that when we go to sell when can take it down if we want).

In Trinidad I would put up a security door. We added a glass paned door to replace an ugly awful nearly hollow "wood" door when we moved in. We like the light and the door is actually more period to the house. We want to add a shade but haven't gotten around to it - just lazy. Also, we're a floor up from the sidewalk (have two flights on stairs on our front) so it makes me less concerned about lookers. Also, not much to see (watching tv, yelling at kids, etc.)

There's a row house near where I work on cap hill that was flipped and sold with a new glass front door like this. I thought it was crazy, since the street it's on gets a ton of foot traffic and anyone can just see straight into your living room and kitchen. I'm sure the flippers loved it because it was basically free advertising for their nice looking flip job. Then someone bought it and put up a shade, which tore in one corner almost immediately. It looks terrible.
