It depends on the dog. Our previous dog liked sleeping in the living room. He'd come upstairs with us while we were getting ready for bed, and then when we were settled in go back downstairs and go to sleep under the table in the living room. Our current dog sleeps either in our room or one of our children's rooms. She would be miserable if we didn't let her sleep in the room with her people.

It is very unusual for puppies to soil their crates. I have a dog that was hard to house train, and he has never messed in his crate.

They do sell attractive wooden crates -- we have one by our back door for when we're going to be out of the house (I'm afraid he'll set off the burglar alarm), but dog now sleeps on dc's bed. It actually helped with the house training, since dogs usually don't soil their beds.

I have two crates for my puppy, now 6 months, Chewy has some good prices.

Dogs don't sleep in our bed, but they do sleep in our room.

My parents always had puppies sleep with them and then moved the puppy out when it was about 3-4 months old. Puppies are just really lonely sometimes and will cry themselves to sleep, so that's why they often sleep in the bedroom. As adults my parent's dogs sleep in their laundry room and they really feel like it's their bedroom. They go in there at night when it's time for bed even.

My dog has always slept in our bedroom and we like it. Doesn't sleep on the bed though.

Dogs are pack animals. They really will be happier if they are with you. If not, it's like CIO with an infant, be prepared for a lot of crying those first few nights. They've spent their whole life in a box with their mother and littermates. Now they're in a strange place and all alone? Scary scary scary for them.

Our primary crate is in our family room, and that's where our puppy stays when we aren't home or if we need to crate her at any time during the day. We got a second, used crate on CL to keep in our bedroom for nighttime. It's also great for tucking the puppy in while we are showering so that she isn't getting into mischief. We expect that once we can trust her she'll just sleep on a dog bed in our room or in with our son, but for now at least she's in the same room with us.

It really depends on the dog. Some dogs are fine sleeping separate from their humans, others aren't. My dog has to at least be in the same room at night or he'll make a commotion and keep everyone up. He's a velcro dog, though.

Were you able to do this even when your dog was a puppy? I worry about it walking around my room pooping/peeing at night while I'm asleep. (I know I'll need to take it out in the middle of the night.)

We didn't have to crate at night. The dog just got it that we were sleeping and he should too. He slept in a laundry basket the first week in our bedroom. Dogs also don't normally have accidents in their crates (animals don't shit in their nest as a general rule) and all the dogs I've had have extended that to our bedroom too. I've never, ever had an accident in our bedroom since the dog thinks it's their bedroom too.
