Ha! My kid, ASD/ADHD, got kicked out of social skills class even before attending. It was Ivymount's Unstuck and On Target program and he was accepted after the required play date (received an acceptance letter in writing) then they must have had second thoughts bc they made us come in again "to see what kind of supports he'll need" and rescinded their acceptance!

This was in second grade. Now he is a rising 4th grader and attends mainstream camps without supports in his hobby where he excels and is rated among the tops kids in the entire USA. So take that Ivymount!

That is ridiculous. I thought Ivymount's mission was to help kids like yours.

Didn't even bother sending mine to camp this summer. Couldn't bear to get "the call." Having a very successful summer. Will try camp next summer, maybe.

Glad to hear your DS is doing well. Let the rest go. Your continued complaints about Ivymount's program are getting old--seriously.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. It's so hard to see everyone else's kids at camp having fun.

I'm the PP that said I've had better luck after finding camps that fit better with my son's interests. Just wanted to clarify that I was in NO WAY suggesting that OP, or anyone else who had a child get kicked out of camp, hadn't done their research. As another PP said, there's a lot of trial and error with our kids. I tried, and I erred that year, apparently. I had done a fair amount of research and the camp he got kicked out of was one that was a highly recommended "fancy" school. He's done better at the Y where the teen counselors are really understanding, even if not "trained" to deal with SN.

I got the call today about my 5yo

She was so looking forward to going to camp with her big sister too.

He told me that he got in trouble but has no idea that he's been asked not to return. I was just blindsided because he's been so polite and nice all week. FWIW This is the 2nd summer in row he's done traditional camps (but not the same as this) - no problems last year.

Hang in there, OP! It should get better eventually. My DS is 14 this summer. He's better able to deal with activity camps and he doesn't need them as much. Life is definitely easier.

I just logged onto the site to post the exact thing. DC just got kicked out after day 3 as well. I am exhausted and sad, but at least I don't have to carry my phone around with me everywhere for the next two days waiting for "the call." I am about to search past posts for suggestions on ASD-friendly camps for next summer. OP - so sorry that happened to you. You are not alone.

I did my research many, many times and my kid still got kicked out of camps, daycares, after care and a private school. The private school was galling, in particular, because I had a lengthy interview with the director and she assured me that they could handle my child's needs and that they had many special needs kids in the past. She'd been teaching for 40+ years and when we left, she said "I've never seen a child like him."

When your kid has special needs, it can be a matter of trial and error. You do your best research and make your best, educated guesses. Sometimes you are right and sometimes you aren't. Sometimes the best environment is the one that no one thought would work. (In my child's case, we ended up transferring to a public school because I was out of ideas. It was the best thing that could have happened.)
