My kids call my father papa.

I don't understand what the problem is with calling the grandpa papa. I'm from the Midwest and I've never heard anyone use it for a father or grandfather, but it seems more like a grandpa name to me. Do your want your kids to call you papa instead of daddy? That would be the only reason why I think you would object. Otherwise I really don't get it.

I called my grandmother "Momma" and Grandfather "Dedde"

Seriously, nit he grand scheme of life, what one calls a grandparent is not a hill to die on. What is the worst that can happen?

Obviously wife would not allow child to call your mother mama.

Where I grew up I didn't know a single person who called their father "Papa." To many of us, "Papa" doesn't mean "dad," regardless of what Google says.

My son pronounced Grandpa "Papa," and it stuck. Even now, I only know foreigners who call their dad Papa. It is not the norm.

I think southerners or people in rural areas may use some variant but not straight Papa.

I'm Southern, never heard any Grandpa called Papa, no father called Papa or anything close to that. Mostly it's a northern thing. Or Hispanic.

My great grandparents were Momette and Popette. They were French. My Grandmother was Grandma, my Grandfather was Grandpa, my mother was Chee Chee, my father died very young so my kids never met him. My husband's mother and father were Maw and Paw, his Grandmother was Gram or Poopie, a childhood nickname. His Grandfather was asshole He died before our kids were born. Mean old man. He went by Paw Paw.

Op, ask your wife if your child can call grandmother "mama"?

Agree. They should BOTH be in agreement.

How do the parents have any say in what grandparents are called? Of course they can manipulate their child into calling the grandparent by a certain name but seriously, why is it appropriate for the parents to have an opinion? My own MIL goes by a ridiculous, silly grandmother name. I can't even put it here because it would out us--it's that weird. but this falls into the category of that over which I have no control.
