Tree cutting is VERY dangerous. How you think the tree will fall vs. how it actually falls is totally different thing. Even professional lumberjacks get killed by falling trees.

I am as cheap as anyone but cutting tree is not something I'd do myself.

My husband does this, but he's a professional carpenter. That size tree he would likely enlist help.

My husband wound up in a wheelchair for several months after a tree trimming accident - and what he was attempting was not exactly crazy either.

A 40 foot tree? So much could go wrong with that. NO WAY.

OP here.

Tree is 40 ft. He's rigged up a complicated system of ropes and pulleys to bring it down portion by portion, but has agree to let me examine the whole thing before he starts sawing.

I will admire his system, say no, and give him the number of the tree guy. He will have a little tantrum, and HOPEFULLY call the guy.

+1. Have a contractor come out and take the top portion of the tree down. Then your husband can deal with taking the rest down and cutting up the wood.
