Started his own consulting business a year and a half ago. The stress of running a startup and the constant travel suck. Rough on the marriage without any real payoff yet, other than he is following his dreams. Also, it ties us down to the DC area, and I want to move. I'm not convinced it would be worth it even if he starts rolling in the big bucks next year. Pie-eating contest where the prize is pie, and all that. But, officially, I'm trying to be supportive!

DH is a physicist. I love how smart he is and that he finds his work fulfilling. He travels too much and the pay could be better, but at the end of the day he's happy, so I'm happy.

It's pretty humble compared to you guys, but my partner works in a busy bookstore. I love it because we get amazing deals on beautiful, often rare or out of print books- especially art books. Also, all of his co workers are educated, smart and interesting.

similar to carpentry, think doors, baseboards, shelving, etc. there's good money in it.


He mostly makes custom kitchens, bathroom vanities, that kind of thing. Also, some commercial properties - for example, lobbies and libraries in retirement homes and condos.


Thank you for explaining. This sounds like splintery work - I hope he wears gloves.

Am I being dense or does the home monitoring business seem like a conflict of interest?

IT consulting. I personally disliked the field when I worked in it, but he loves it so I'm happy for him. He 100% prioritizes our family over work, so he's home by 5 every day and rarely works weekends. The company has been good to him.
