I use to live in California and there was actually a company that would go around and collect all the carts and return them to the store (for a fee.)

I like the idea of the wheels locking to not leave the parking lot, instead of paying the deposit to use a cart...like a PP said, I don't always have the right change on me to put in the machine.

The Harris Teeter near my house has this too. I also like the idea of making people pay a deposit to use a cart. That's the best way. It could stop the lazy losers from leaving carts all over the damned parking lots.

Yeah Aldi does that here. Problem is that 90% of the time I don't have a quarter on me and so I only buy what I can carry in my hands. Their policy actually makes me buy less.

And their parking lot is clearer but they also don't have to hire the person to collect the carts, so that is also a cost savings for them (and no job for someone).

I agree with this. They are very expensive for the store to buy and maintain. I'm surprised they don't want them back.
