Sometimes last min people get off the Waitlist at a private school that is their first choice. They accepts and then tje space opens at Lafayette. *Sometimes

I highly doubt it. At this point, anyone who is going to private preschool has made that decision and notified Lafayette accordingly. You could always have a family move and so not be able to take the spot, but that's your only source of movement at this point.

Also just a PSA - early stages places kids in the most appropriate classroom that has space, not necessarily at their IB school. The placement process is lengthy and includes the parents, specialists and DCPS.

Once those kids are in via the early stages process they can stay. Disabilities are often not visible -- so their families may look like boundary cheaters.

I think those 3 spots are for kids who go through the early stages (special needs) process.

This is correct. Those spaces will stay empty/can only be filled by children with special needs, who have the right to enter as soon as they turn 3, even after 9/30. Or as soon their disability is identified. They can't go to other children, IB or OOB.

And then 31 waitlist placements from last year (doesn't say at what stage in the process (early waitlist placements from people who got in initially and didn't accept vs. toward the end of the summer - that's something you could ask the administrator). At this point, the slots are typically held by families that have already gone through the process of registering. There's usually waves in May when families first get accepted, than in June when there's the spaces to fill by families who are accepted by don't register/accept within a month or pull out because they heard from private school acceptances. Then it's usually August before additional movement when some families decide in the end to stay with a preschool or get off the private wait list. Going to visit the staff in person can help with getting some intel if you get them at a good time and help with building relationships - or if you're good at that on the phone - and just try to say you know they can't give out too much info but try to get them chatty. Can ask what they think might happen based on last year (like how many IB kids came off the wait list last year or the impact of adding the 5th class section). There's much less movement off the waitlists in general past few years. NONE of the Ward 3 schools have been letting in OOB kids to the prek's in the past several years - and the class sizes are limited to 20, where in K and up, they go higher (have to accommodate every IB kids and most schools are expected by DCPS to still take in 10% OOB kids from K-5.)
