Perhaps, but the reason for denial is that Canada wants to make certain that you can return to the USA and not become "their problem".
Prior to 9/11 no proof of citizenship was needed to travel freely between our two countries. Obviously that event changed everything.
The bigger question is why people, not just this OP, wait so long to get a passport.

PP here, the secret passport office is mainly for government officials, like Congress people and Senators, Cabinet members, etc., it is not open to the general public. BUT your Congress rep can get you in for an emergency (ours involved a death in the family). I don't know if your situation meets their criteria but it can't hurt to ask.

Call your Congressman/woman. They have staff for this constituent service. They can get you a special letter to allow you access to the super secret passport office above the regular one on 19th Street. I thought it was a myth until my husband actually needed a passport in one day due to a family emergency (it's a long story).I called my rep's office, the staff member who handled emergency passport issues faxed to me the special letter, my husband took it with him to the address on 19th, they let him in, he got a passport in 2 hours, and flew out that night.

Go to the passport office this weekend. They are having passport day. Super rare!

Agree with this. They scan and inspect it closely every time I cross the border and have given me grief several times just because my hair is a different color now. I only ever cross at the Thousand Islands crossing though, so maybe they're just extra cranky there.

I got that too! Had to explain that I paid good money for my highlights.

I also get grilled about the purpose of my trip, although that's mostly because I am generally there on business.
