We got one around 10 mos and have tried over and over to get now-20 mos DS to sleep in it since then (we have left it out for him to play in so he could get used to it, we have added better bedding, we have tried sitting next to him while he falls asleep, etc) and he just will. not. sleep. there. Total waste of money.
I would try the Pack n' Play again before the trip and see if the size is actually a problem. I've seen lots of babies sleep perpendicularly in their cribs, so feeling cramped clearly doesn't bother some...

Almost exact same situation here. He will play in it but not sleep. We are traveling this weekend and I am taking it and nothing else. Wish me luck!

Update: We took the Peapod on our trip last week. DS is now 26 months. We talked it up for a couple of days before. He could barely wait to get in and go to sleep. He slept wonderfully in there all week. I never would have predicted that. What a difference a few months makes.

When my DD was 2, we were concerned she wouldn't like the Pack N Play. DH spent a while before bed building it up as a Super! Fantastic! AWESOME! Big Girl Bed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and got her so excited about it that she happily went to sleep in it.

For vacations where we had our own car we would just bring a portable bedrail with us. We'd push the bed against a wall and attach the bedrail to the other side and sometimes one parent would sleep in the bed with DC.

Another vote for the baby Bjorn travel crib. Our son is 2 1/2 and still uses it when we travel.
