Boulder is great. But holy crap it's expensive! And not very diverse. My immediate family (parents, siblings) has ended up there, first one, then another then another and so on. I'd love to move there and be close to them if it weren't for the non-diversity and the ridiculous real estate prices combined with not as many employment opportunities. But you're talking retirement.

Not OP, but I've been eyeing the Sam Hughes area in Tucson. It's not cheap though.

I'd love to go to the central coast of CA, where I went to college. But CA is definitely not tax friendly for retirees.

Really, we'll stay put in Arlington until our kids settle down and then end up moving near one of them. If they stay in DC, we'd probably move someplace farther out so we can reap the equity in our house, maybe Winchester or Leesburg.

We love Maine, but taxes there are quite high. NH has no state income tax.

I would be interested in Colorado, but I can't get past the looming water issues in the Mountain West/Southwest.

My new favorite is Bainbridge Island, WA. It's just across the sound from Seattle and is spectacularly beautiful. But I think we'd probably only stay there 10-15 years until our health deteriorated enough to need an easier living environment. I like it when it isn't too cold or too hot.

The best answer is the classic one:

Spend your summers in the New England countryside. Great history. Lost of scenery. A healthy, outdoor lifestyle. Plus there are great hospitals nearby.

In the winter go down to GA - FL. Easier & slower living, but still great for a retiree lifestyle. Take occasional trips to visit family over holidays.

This advice is all stereotypical. That's right. People do this for a reason.

Florida, for sure. People retire there for a reason. It's beautiful, affordable, and many communities cater to retirees.

A lot of my retired coworkers moving to SC.
