Curious what you mean by first grown up job. And was it hard to get into government?

Have you looked at think tanks or foundation jobs?

With your profile it sounds like you might be able to find something private sector for more money, and possible still flexible as well. But I'm guessing you are going to really miss the autonomy and mission aspects. Are you sure there are no nonprofit jobs you can move to and increase your salary?

When I was a consultant at Deloitte all we did was make powerpoints. However, they may be skeptical of your PowerPoint abilities if you didn't graduate from an ivy.

This is me but after 4 years in a tiny nonprofit. I had no real prospects of getting anything in the for profit world and consider myself very very lucky to have landed in the federal government.

I agree with this suggestion and there are a lot of opportunities if you are still in the DC area. Check out the ASAE website. If you work for one of the larger non-profits or trade associations, you may find that you can make more money. I just moved from for-profit to a non-profit and I make more money at my new job, plus the benefits are FAR better (and way less expensive) than my for-profit job.
