You spend 40 hours a week (or more) with these people. Get along with them. If you borrow something, leave a note. If you take something, return it.

At least it wasn't the red stapler.

It pisses me off when people take things off my desk and don't return them.

If you really said "sorry to have inconvenienced you" - that probably didn't help. Most people would likely interpret that as a snarky thing to say, even if you meant it to be polite and sincere.

This is a serious question - not trying to be mean myself - but have you found yourself having problems with people misinterpreting your intent when you say things? If you regularly feel misunderstood, you might consider how you relate to your coworkers. A light-hearted "whoops - it was late and I totally forgot to return them. Sorry about that" may have gone over better.

not returning them and then leaving the old data on the shared drive spells negligence. Then when pointed out to her she refuses to see what the problem is. So that's two big problems: she's both negligent and clueless. Negligence is usually just a form of laziness.

Even if they are communal scissors you took them off her desk, which means you violated her personal space while she wasn't there. You deserve a frosty response since you didn't even put them back. She sounds direct about the other thing.

I think you need to grow a thicker skin.
