JFC, what is their aversion to doing an ultrasound? Are you seeing an MFM in addition to a regular OB?

An u/s can't tell you if there is a leak, but it can tell you if there's enough fluid. (If someone's water fully breaks, it will be VERY apparent on an u/s that there is a very low fluid level immediately following the break.) In this case, if she had a leak a week ago and the fluid is fine now, then the leak self-repaired even if there was one... so much less to worry about either way.

I guess what I'm asking is, an ultrasound cannot detect an actual puncture in the amniotic sac, right?

But an AFI wouldn't necessarily tell you if there was a leak or not, just whether the fluid levels were low/normal. You could have very high AFI level and still have a rupture, especially if not much fluid came out. Right?

Just looking for low fluid levels or something?

Yes, ultrasound can be use to check how much amniotic fluid is there. It's call AFI.

It can give you indication whether you are leaking or not.

OP here, appreciate those checking in. I actually got a followup appointment for this morning, and (although they still didn't do an ultrasound) they checked once more for any pooling of fluid and tested for amniotic fluid, and both things were negative. They monitored the baby for quite awhile and the heartbeat was strong and steady. I haven't had any more fluid loss since the night of the initial event. So at this point I'm feeling okay about it. My next appointment isn't for another couple of weeks, so if anything seems amiss, I will definitely call and ask for another followup before then.

Are you in the DC area? What practice are you with? I would show up there today even without an appointment and get an ultrasound

Surprised no ultrasound. I would schedule one ASAP for peace of mind
