If the job you applied for was a GS11, they can bring you in at GS11 Step 10. The only raise you'll get is the 1% cost of living increase every January. When you have been a GS11 for a year, you will be eligible to apply for a GS12 on USAJOBS.


read the fine print on the job description. We only hire non-Feds at step 1. No exceptions.




Yeah, that may just be your agency. I was hired at a GS 13 step 10. Would not have taken the job otherwise.

Me too. Then had to apply through USA Jobs to get promoted to 13.

It depends a great deal on your agency, its budget, and your particular department. I have worked for several agencies, some automatically promote to the next grade after one year in service with a satisfactory (3+) annual review rating. Others make you wait until you have more experience, gain new skills, work on special projects, etc. So an 11/12/13 position you could theoretically be a 13 in two years, but don't assume you will. It might take four, five years, even longer to get there.

We who? Not true (Step 1 no exception). I know one guy being offered at Step 10 (and he still walked away at the end).
