Use to be you couldn't be an organ donor. Has that changed?

My 17 year old nephew got a tattoo in honor of a close friend who died. I don't think he'll ever regret it (fairly large tattoo on his chest). My DD is 18 and doesn't have a tattoo yet, but DH did take her to get a septum piercing when she was 17. She wants to get a tattoo but not until she's certain that she finds something that she wants forever (some of her friends got really dumb tattoos as soon as they turned 18 so at least she realized that she should put some thought into it).

Tattoos are going to be pretty commonplace among this generation and I don't think see what the big deal is long as they aren't getting entire sleeves, neck tattoos, face tattoos, tramp stamps, etc. I certainly don't think all tattoos are trashy.

I'm glad that most of the decisions I made for myself at 17 aren't permanent. Unfortunately the daughter in this case cannot say the same. I don't disagree with what the mother did because I don't like tattoos (I do, and I think Kat Von D is gorgeous in all her tattooed glory) but I disagree with a 17 year old getting a tattoo because I just believe in a few years she'll likely regret something about it--either the location or the subject matter. It's just such a permanent thing in such a conspicuous place for a 17 year old to decide.

It's not necessarily about being the cool mom. My friend took her daughter (she was 19 though) to get tattoos. Both of them. They honored my friend's dad who had just passed away, and who her daughter had been extraordinarily close to.

A 19 year old is an adult. Her mom may have gone with her but ultimately the 19 year old is the one who consented to the tattooing. She didn't require her mom's consent - unlike the 17 year old who did require parental consent. There is a difference.

Got my first tattoo at 17 (mother also went and consented). Don't regret the tattoo (I have more) but do regret its location. Thinking of having it removed and put somewhere else but haven't made the move yet.

Why is everyone assuming its white trash? I've seen plenty of huge, ugly tattoos on blacks (and Hispanics, etc).
