Do you think she was on a cruise? My son's teacher was absent for a week - she was seriously ill.

I have not done this but was recently thinking about the issue. My HS son's teachers are frequently out, this greatly impacts learning because days with substitute teachers are a waste.

Obviously teachers have sick days, personal days and emergencies, but they also may have professional development and out of school programs they opt to attend or are required to attend. This is especially common for special education teachers or ELL teachers. Please do not fault the teacher when you do not know the extent of the issue.

How do you count the days/times when the teacher is booked in IEP related meetings? I know at least 3 other kids in my DS's class have IEPs (in addition to him). I also know the school tries to schedule as many in one day as they can. Substitutes come in for those days. Do you consider that an absence?

How do you know? My children don't always tell me if they had a sub and no, I don't take attendance on their teachers. Sometimes they mention they had a half day sub because their teacher had to go to meetings. Do you count these? I'm a teacher and took 10 sick days in a school year once when one child was very ill. It could have been much more but relatives helped. MYOB.
