I strongly second this. The Besta line is solid and can look very high end.

OP-thanks for all the suggestions. This is really helpful. I'm encouraged by the posts saying its not too hard to customize the Ikea shelves.

Wow, indeed. OP said she wanted built-ins on a budget. PPs obliged with links about IKEA hacks to create inexpensive built-ins. You, on the other hand, posted a link where the cheapest (single, standalone) bookcase is $400.

Not op, but how is what you listed any different (or better) than what any other posters said? I found them way more helpful, actually.

OP, I also hacked some billy bookcases. I had 3 white singles and screwed them together. Measured across the sides and the back and went to Lowes. I purchased a 16 foot molding and had them cut to the 3 appropriate sizes. I made sure I got the kind that could fit into the already made corner cmoulding blocks (like this: http://www.lowes.com/pd_224069-746-MN49_1z0ufhj__?productId=3053907&pl=1#img). I also bought a couple of thin moldings to bring down where each of the bookcases met. Not having to mitre anything made this a super simple project and it looks great!

OP - thanks guys for all the suggestions

We need to sound insulate the bedroom wall a little and then hope to cover the insulation with floor to ceiling closets. Went to Ikea on Mother's day and really liked the Pax series. Pax doesn't have extension, so we have to add molding or come up with something else.
We do have 2 Billys in the living room that are full of books. They look great, but since the bedroom wall is over 16 feet x 8 feet, we need something other than all bookcases.
Hope it looks good when we are done. It always does in the magazines.

I love Ikea Hemnes. Solid wood, good quality, no offgassing formaldehyde or other crap. They have a white STAIN. Don't confuse it with the WHITE, which is not solid wood.

Nope. If you know your measurements you can have Home Depot cut the molding to size for you in advance. You can buy it pre-primed and just paint to match your existing trim. We did use a nail gun but you probably don't need that.
