I like having travel players in rec soccer. "Travel" should be a part-time thing through U12 or so, anyway, like Little League baseball players who also dabble on a travel team but still get to play in their community league.

We just do winter rec indoor (no practices).

I find it excessive to do so many practices per week and additional games. Burn out.

I also don't want to have my kid be like some of the prima donnas that can't make it to Rec practices but just come to the Rec games. I think that sends a bad message. It's also not fair to the kids that only play Rec.

Interesting. Our DD's rec coach had no problem missing the practices but maybe b/c DD is a team player and defenders aren't always so showy, DD could not have added a fourth practice to her week. She eventually stopped playing rec due to schedule.

I have a child on travel and rec and the rec parents are definitely louder and more aggressive. Most travel programs have a code of rules and someone on the team is assigned to talk to you if you cheer loud so if OP story is true, it is an anomaly. Also in travel kids learn that you have to pass all the time. This does not happen in rec so there are actually less ball hogs in travel. Finally travel gives kids a hell of a lot of humility. Most kids who are stars in rec then show up at travel and get it that they are certainly not Alex Morgan.
