To wash, it may be worth a trip to the laundromat. I broke my washer trying to shove ours in (probably fine if you have a large front loader).

They don't have a smell.

they have fabric softener. They smell. Also, they leave a chemical greasy feel to the clothes -- towels are particularly gross-feeling. Once you stop using them, you'll understand the difference.

So what do you use instead? Nothing? Don't your clothes stick together and get all staticky? (Is that a word?)

No, they really don't. The only time I have an issue is when i'm wearing hose and a skirt made out of polyester etc. and it's winter (dry).

That's because you're used to the smell. I stopped using them years ago when my kids developed asthma, and I could not believe how intense the smell was once we were no longer surrounded by it. It's nasty. Sorry. I'm so glad dryer sheets are going out of style.

No I have not washed the comforter just yet. I need a day where I have time to tend to the drying of it. It's my only comforter so will need it ready the same day.

To those debating about returning - only way I would consider that, is if I washed according the the directions and the comforter fell apart or got destroyed in some way. In that case I would contact LL Bean because I know their products are guaranteed.

What's wrong with dryer sheets?

Most people I know don't use them anymore. And once you stop using them, you realize the smell stays on everything ad infinitum.

OP, dryer sheets are on the way out. If you use dryer sheets on a down comforter, you will never get the chemicals out. Just FYI you may want to avoid them.

I wash my LL Bean comforters all the time. Then dry in the sunshine if it's warm enough. Otherwise dryer. Seriously, I wash them often.
