My sister and I were very close until she had her kids. Overnight she wanted little to do with me, and her kids became everything. I had to call her, I had to visit and finally I had enough.

Her kids grew up, one moved to another country the other a hour a way. Her husband ended up dying from a heart attack. I noticed she started calling more and actually talked about visiting me. She never had use for friends because again it was only her kids that were important. She does a lot with her husband's family but that's about it. At this point I'll talk to her on the phone here and there, but I have no desire to see her or invest in anything..long moved on.

My sister and I were hot and cold growing up. We'd get along great sometimes, but I've never fought with ANYONE as hard or as mean as I did with my sister.

We grew out of it. I wouldn't call us "best friends" but we're really close now as adults. She moved to my area, and I love that. We are still pretty different in some ways, but as we've gotten older, more similar too. I love that our kids will be friends and grow up together.

Is she a mentally ill in a way that precludes a close relationship? A few people have mentioned mental illness and I'm not sure what they mean. I struggle with depression -- would my sister describe me as "mentally ill," full stop, as if that's the end of that story. Just wondering...

I'm so jealous of all the close sisters. My sister is a bit high strung and does not seem to want that close of a relationship with me. My other sister is mentally ill. I long for a close connection with one of them.

Yes- mine is my only sibling and we're twins. She's lives about 5 minutes away from me and we see each other a lot. My poor long-suffering husband...but his mother is a twin so he gets it to some extent.

I do not have a sister, but I always wanted one.

I am very close with all my SILs (brother's wife, DH's sister, DH's brother's wife), so I did get my sisters later in life.

My sisters aren't my best friends. We are so different that we might not have chosen to interact if we weren't sisters. But they are kind of like my limbs - incredibly important to my quality of life, always there, and taken sometimes for granted. The relationship I share with them is among the most important in my life. It is nice to know that there are people in this world that love and accept you unconditionally and will always have your back

I have 2 sisters and I wish I was.

I was never close to my older sister, she was a bully and abusive towards me my entire life and my parents allowed her to get away with it. I limit my contact with her now. I would completely cut her off if it wasn't for wanting to see my niece and nephew.


My younger sister and I used to be super close growing up. Not as much now. We're just very different people, but we do hang out from time to time.

I do wish I had that best friend sibling relationship that some people have.

My sister is my best friend. We talk 3 times a day on the phone, and see each other about 4 times during the week. We live about 1.5 miles apart.
