Actually, this is exactly what happened to us last year: 2 weeks into the DCPS school year but before our NW independent school started. We'd gotten tuition insurance, and it would have covered it as long as we attended 2 weeks, but since it would have been for a financial reason, the coverage, as I recall, was only 40% of the remainder. The DCPS was willing to at least consider us enrolling 2 weeks later than planned, so that the missed days won't count as absences, but in the end, we ended up staying.

I would look at your contract. Also, if it's a school that has a long wait list and they're able to fill your spot in time, they may have empathy and not charge you. They legally may be able to charge you, but that doesn't mean that they will charge you. Does that make sense? Wait and see what happens and if you get a spot, call the school and explain your situation.

That is what ours is as well. There are some exclusions, mostly on the medical withdrawal clause.
