Had a party with some of my DC friends and then left the area for several days.

Had a kid.

A good friend threw me a lovely party, wherein I took my now-husband home for the evening.

Uh, most people on this thread did go out and celebrate. Some of us (like me) stayed in and celebrated with her husband. I'm sure that I also went out to a birthday dinner with family and had a bday lunch with a friend.

My 50th was the same sort of thing. No big party, no weekend away. I spent a beautiful day outside with my husband and kids and we went to a quaint restaurant with a view for lunch. I felt loved.

DH and I went to a fabulous, tiny, secluded, boutique hotel in Mexico. It was awesome. Our 15th anniversary is next summer and we will be going back.

Best vacation ever.

I had a choice between a big party and a trip and I'm SO glad I picked the trip.

Just don't do what a friend of mine did.

We made plans for a quick, fun weekend away. About 1-2 months before her birthday, she backed out and decided to spend it with just close family. Ok, fine.

Then fairly last minute, she decided to have a friends bday dinner, 2 weeks after her bday. Seeing as that was not the weekend we planned on, I made plans many months prior, and skipped her 40th dinner. And she was resentful of me for it.

I get that some people freak out or make a big deal about turning 40. But don't hold that same standard to others, especially when they have already tried to make an effort to do something fun with you.

Had sex and did a bunch of other things to try and get labor started. I was two weeks overdue.

Surprise party at Jaleo.

My wife made dinner and we ate with her parents. There probably was pie.

DH and I turned 40 at about the same time. We threw ourselves a dinner party at a restaurant we like with about 50 people. Had a private room and stayed late. Big fun! We did a trip (without kids) later in the year to Key West, which was bliss.
