It doesn't have to be expensive, and you are not constrained by other people planning one for you ( who made that a rule?!).
Uh, most people on this thread did go out and celebrate. Some of us (like me) stayed in and celebrated with her husband. I'm sure that I also went out to a birthday dinner with family and had a bday lunch with a friend.
My 50th was the same sort of thing. No big party, no weekend away. I spent a beautiful day outside with my husband and kids and we went to a quaint restaurant with a view for lunch. I felt loved.
