Bc I hate the bootie look I am no longer interested in either shoes or jeans.
And at 43 I actually have a great midsection but most fashion is draggy / boxy for designed to given women with tummies and slim legs an edge. As an hourglass,
That's not me and so I will stick to my current wardrobe

I am buying more clothes now. My income is much higher and I can get better clothing. My figure is also better in my 40s as I finally have time to exercise which I didn't have in my 30s when my children were very young. I have always loved clothes and have a lot of places to wear them (my job involves a lot of client dinners, events etc)

+1. At the same time, Eileen Fisher and Chicos look like crap. So what exactly can I buy? Whole lotta nothing.

I'm 45 and would love to drop some money on clothes. I love clothes. But I'm short, chubby, bosomy, and have wide feet. No one makes beautiful, stylish clothes for me. So I buy the boring basics and channel my energies into decorating my home.

I now realize the wisdom of, and can afford, high quality expensive items that I don't donate after one season. I've collected enough timeless jewelry by now that I have no interest in picking up several pairs of $30 earrings each year or a new statement ring that I'll wear a couple of times. Virtually all of my jewelry from the past 10 years has been gifts from DH or family heirlooms. When I buy clothes or a purse I make sure the quality is good and that I will still want to wear it next season.

It astounds me to think of all the fast fashion I cycled through in my 20's.

Most women over 40 also find that what you see in fashion magazines is not designed for them. All those exciting new spring fashions? Look at them and see how many are appropriate or desirable for a 50 yo.

Another thought- when you're buying for kids (especially teenagers) there's either less of the pie left for you or you shoot your shopping wad on them and are less enthusiastic about shopping for yourself.

"Women’s spending on apparel peaks at age 44 and then enters a long slump, according to a Goldman Sachs research report. The question is, why?

Why would a woman’s enthusiasm for fashion slow just as her household income is reaching its highest level and her career and social requirements are at their most demanding?"

I think its because women begin to lose their looks and their interest in fashion drops too.

Oh, Jesus...because their earnings DROP after having kids...they divorce...or they realize they regret spending $600 on Hermes scarves and need to up the retirement saving game, plus college, private school, etc.

Probably. But, so what. Why is there an expectation that a 50 year old look young and slim? People's bodies change as they age. They just do. And most clothing is tailored to young bodies, so people get discouraged, annoyed, or just set in what they like & they stick to that. Not a big deal.

I'm the same size I was 10 years ago; regardless, I still have lost a great deal of interest in fashion.

I'm 31 but I am better at seeing quality and can afford it. So I replace stuff less often.
