He doesn't really care about the older music, so the thought is by the time he cuts the cord, he will have at least a years worth of his own purchases to take with him. We never bothered with iTunes for my now 15 yo DS. I knew what we would be in for with his changing tastes in music as he matured. Instead we subscribe to a music streaming service for $10 a month. This way our family has unlimited access to music of all types and he can create his own playlists. This has been a wonderful way for him to develop his tastes in music and now he has moved completely away from pop music and has his own eclectic play list...mainly alternative rock pieces. He does not listen to the old stuff he liked when he was 12. So if you think about it, all that money would have been wasted on the music he would have purchased back then.
