I live in Fort Totten (the neighborhood) and work in NOMA (by the metro station). My house is awesome (and affordable), my neighbors are great and my commute is absolutely amazing - 20 minutes d2d by train (includes .5 mile walk to ft. totten station), or even faster if i bike down using met branch trail. So.... not sure what you're talking about here.

They said the red line is the least likely to have a long shut down because they've been doing repairs on it already.

All these options that mention metro as means to commute-- is it possible that that is the line that metro will shut down for as long as 6 months at a time? I don't use metro, but I'm wondering how this is going to affect those that do use metro to commute. MAybe metro will provide buses? Set up a "Bus only" express lane? I hope they can find a helpful solution!

There are some decent 2 bedroom places under $2000 in bound for J.O. Wilson, but the neighborhoods are not what I would describe as "quiet". I would actually recommend Ft. Totten, near the metro, if you want to stay in DC, and Silver Spring/Takoma Park (again, close to metro) if not. Rush hour traffic from MD into DC along Rhode Island Ave or NY Ave is very painful and time consuming.

There are some rentals in the Forest Glen area.

If you can afford walking distance to SS or Takoma Park metro the commute would be ideal! Keep in mind that there is not commuter parking at Takoma Park. I go in to Metro Center from SS daily and on a normal day the ride from SS to NoMa isn't more than 10 minutes. Forest Glen would be a good, cheaper option too but not sure about apartment options walkable to that metro.

Silver Spring, Wheaton, Glenmont...anything on that side of the red line will give you a decent commute. Depending on what time you arrive, driving in may be cheaper than metro - the lot that I park in sometimes is $7 before 9am. I come from farther away, but metro for me, all up, is well over twice that per day.

PP who scoffed: I checked myself right afterward and you are right--super short commute! I was totally wrong. And now I'm going to take the Metro to SS sometime because I live a short walk from the NoMa stop.
