Thanks for info on the maltese and cavachon

poodles are supposed to be high strung-- the little ones in particular. bI definitely don't want an ugly hairless dog and-- I know this sounds picky-- but preferably a female. Everyone in my house is a male and I don't want to look at balls! sorry just some added humor....

Why don't you just get a miniature poodle?

Cockapoo - no shedding and no allergies.

My Maltese doesn't effect my severe allergies. So sweet and gentle and not as independent or rambunctious as a Yorkie.

Cavachon - low to no shed, hypoallergenic, super sweet and cute, smart, doesn't bark a lot, small not tiny like the yorkies.

there are these hairless (almost) dogs - its a Mexican breed which is an ancient dog that hasn't changed much. The only drawback is they are super ugly. A few tufts of hair on the top of their heads only. Looks kind of like a dog crossed with a pig.

but definitely wouldn't cause any allergies.

That's so cute that the whole neighborhood has them. I am starting allergy shots soon b/c of sinusitis, so I am hoping those will be helpful. Thanks for the breeder info... I know poodles don't shed, but cockerspaniels do... so that might be an issue... If we go through a breeder, we would also be super careful re: communication etc. There's all these poo mixes....I also don't want too small.... thus, a yorkie might be too small...

I guess the good thing if you go via breeder recs, is you aren't paypaling a deposit into the internets and never seeing your money or a dog.
I believe my parents mentioned that emailing back and forth with the breeder was a good experience. They were very responsive when there were questions.

Also, they produce some very cute, very snuggly dogs. As I said, I also have a dog allergy and have no problems with the cockapoo (keep in mind the cost of grooming, as they have hair not fur).

One of their neighbors got one, and then half the neighborhood all bought one because the first dog was so cute and well socialized, so everyone owns half-brother/sister cockapoos, which is kind of cute to get them all together in the park.

DH and I are both allergic to shedding dogs but we got lucky. We went to the shelter with the intent to just look and a man was dropping off his Yorkie mix puppy. The dog came right to us and started playing with us and we decided to take him on the spot. DH got hives the first day we had him and I was so worried we had made a mistake, but no allergy issues since and he doesn't shed at all.

I would NOT recommend this method (we were young and stupid), but if you're looking for a small dog look for one that is mixed with poodle or bichon.

Op here: thanks for your helpful comments. I am going to look at rescues. But... On the off chance that we can't find, can you recommend breeders? I agree-- the cost is crazy and I would rather not do that, but I have always wanted a dog! And now my kids do! Thx

My son has dog allergies and we got a Goldendoodle. After the first two weeks, he has had no problems with her at all. He would nuzzle his face into her fur in the beginning and get hives, but he soon learned not to do that. And even so, he seems to have gotten over it even if he does.

We did have to go through a breeder, though I would've preferred a rescue, we didn't know what choice we had. Love our doodle!

I'm not trying to be a Debbie downer, my parents have a cockapoo and I love her to pieces. I am also mildly allergic to dogs, and I'm constantly rubbing all over her with no problems when I'm at their house, which is weekly.

But a XXX poo or XXX doodle is a mutt, not a recognized AKC breed, and as such OP don't fall for these "breeders" who are charging ridiculous amounts of money for "designer dogs".

PP I wasn't trying to ding your post. My emphasis was on the do not fall for the "breeders" who are selling these dogs and charging out the wazoo. My parents paid $1200 for their cockapoo. That is ridiculous. As it's a mutt, there is no such things as champion bloodlines, because there is no breed standard. the places that breed these dogs are often taking advantage of the name recognition, and that people don't realize (my parents included...) that these dogs shouldn't cost an arm and a leg bc they're effectively mutts. Also, there are a lot of different ways to make up these dogs, so you're often not warrantied against health problems.

My inlaws have one of these and it's WILD. I guess it's a breed trait? It's been to dog training school so many times. Terriers are known to be mischievous.
