You sound like you don't know what you are talking about.

I had a makeover in the fall and the stylist had me try using brown eyeshadow (use a brush to apply in thin line under eyes) like a PP suggested. I love it. Looks a lot > natural than eyeliner.

I actually never wore eyeliner when I was young and started in my 30s. I find it makes me look more awake and I feel like I look tired without it. I don't really understand the people who are saying that eyeliner is for young women only.

OP, the last time I went through Duty Free, I picked up a little compact that has two shades of dark brown powder eye shadow, and a tiny brush to apply it; the powder is very tinted and easily picks up on the tapered bristles of the brush, and surprisingly, it stays in place all day (though you can easily smudge it with a finger if you want). This looks very natural: much softer than pencil liner. It is by Bare Minerals.

OP, I like the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil from Sephora. I find that eyeliner greatly improves my look, more so than mascara, but I think it really depends on the person.

OP here. Thanks for the advice and suggestions. The black cat eye look was definitely not what I was thinking of. In the past when I tried liner pencils they always seemed very hard to get on. Will go to Sephora or a make up counter and consult n options for a subtle look. Thanks.

OP there are some good smudgable eye liners in brown, which are softer and less harsh than the Amy Winehouse liquid black look.

I found some at Clinique and some less expensive ones at Maybeline work very well. I'm mid-40s too and I combine a small amount of liner with a smudge of brown liquid shadow and then black mascara.

If I wear these I seem visible to the world, and when I don't, I am effectively wearing an invisibility cloak.

OP, have you tried a powder liner? Or using a stuff thin line brush to apply some dark brown eyeshadow as a liner? It might be more subtle. I would go to a makeup counter at Bobby brown or Sephora and have them show you eyeliner options. there are list of options for liner.

Subtle eyeliner, yes. Thick unblended liner with specks flaking off, no. I only line my upper lids. Overlining can make eyes look small.
