I have noticed this trend too and it's awful. When I was making $200k I had some guys like this chasing after me. One was extremely good looking but lazy as hell and worked at a homeless shelter. He called me relentlessly. I weeded guys like this out by telling them early on that I did not want to work if I have kids. Even worse is the trend of men marrying women for their rich fathers. We all know people who have done this and it's a whole other level of pathetic.

I think it shows men are not stupid. Money is useful, and also women who have the ability earn money are more likely stable and sensible.

Please don't generalize. DH is a go-getter and is an amazing man and partner. I would never want to be a single parent.

I think it's ok for a guy to want a similarly high earner; it can make for an easier lifestyle. I wouldn't want the entire burden of supporting a spouse and a family; it's nice to be able to share the load.

What I wouldn't be ok with is a true male gold digger - a guy who wanted a high-earning wife so he could sit on his ass all the time and live off of me. I'm not ok with that. (I'm not ok with the female version either.)

I have a few friends who seem to always pick guys who end up using them for their money. These guys end up moving into my friends' houses and eventually when they break up, the guy owes my friend money because they borrowed money from them for stuff. That wouldn't fly with me.

Define your criteria. Is state school, OK, or are you looking for U.S. News ranking prestige? And what's more important--selective undergrad, or holding a graduate degree?

Personally, as a guy, I'd just as soon avoid any Ivy types who don't also have family money, aren't earning much, if anything, and still have an Ivy-type sense of entitlement about life.
