Per bedroom. Per person would make sense if you were paying for utilities, but with most vacation rentals/hotels, you're not doing that.

We recently vacationed with my brother's family and got a 2 bedroom - one family per room. Our sister joined in last minute and took the pull out couch in the living room - we didn't have her pitch in for that, because we were going to get the 2 bd anyway.

This is exactly why I don't do vacations with my family.

We are three sib families plus parents. One sib flies her entire family in from the west coast; the rest of us drive. The three families who drive split the house three ways. The family who flies pays nothing towards the house, but pays the plane tickets - about equal. That family is the most strapped financially, so I do not think they could come if we added house $$ on top of the plane tickets. Traditionally, they have used the extra room for their kids (5 bedroom house) and our younger ones have bunked with us - but so be it.

This.

And the master bedroom should cost more than the crappy tiny room where the single sister ends up.

We split the cost per family.

I mean it's best to try and be fair and above board, but it seems a bit tacky to nickel and dime to this degree.

I agree with the second part. If OP is also the poster who is essentially asking that she not have to pay a share for her older kid because she is a single parent and that kid will be in a shared bedroom, you won't be happy and should not do this. It is similar to paying for a meal with others. Either just split the meal equally among the adults or pay per person.

No, I'm not the single parent. We can all afford it, but is it fair for one family to pay half what other families pay because they only have one adult? (They already pay significantly less in airfare.) Or conversely, is it fair for a family of five (two adults) to pay the same as a family of three (one adult) even if they use the same number of bedrooms (one).

In my family, each family pays thensame. Even when my brother had 3 kids and we had one.

My in-laws, everyone pays what they want. Which typically means the person who rented the place gets screwed.

My extended family, one cousin pays for the entire house but she likes doing it as a gift to the family, and because she can.
