People here are incapable of getting past greatschools ratings and FARM/ESL statistics. The reality is that your children can do fine in just about any school in Fairfax County. There are opportunities for children of all levels at every school. Find a home that will work for you, check out the schools personally to see what you think, and don't read too many posts on this forum.
+1 people here thing McLean and Langley are the only schools worth sending your kids to and you should rent a tiny one bedroom apartment in order to send your kids there rather than buy a smaller house or worse, let your kids go to school with an ~immigrant~. There are some shitty schools, yes, but there are others that are decent even if they aren't rich and a GS 10. Do your due diligence and honestly, try to find people to talk to in some of the neighborhoods in question and see how they like their schools and neighborhoods.
You know, it's okay
The kind of people who fall into Langley or McLean at all costs camp are likely the kind of people who would change the wonderful culture of places like WSHS and other schools into pressure cookers.
It is good that they are so insistent upon getting into those limited school pyramids because it allows many of the rest of them to continue doing so many things right.
Let them go.

Was thinking Lee? Edison? Annandale? FC? I would rather not go out as far as west Springfield. Budget is 550k. Tell me quick if I have no good options.
Nothing on the market there now, but houses in the Dunn Loring Woods neighborhood that feeds into Marshall often are in your price range.
I was going to suggest this. There are also some subdivisions tucked off of electric near gallows that have SFH going for less than 650k. You used to be able to find sub-600 in this area and even town of Vienna, but I think those days are over unless it's a tear down.
But, I would have no issues sending my kids to Woodson, south lakes, or fairfax hs.
