They would if you have a preschool director who is involved in the admissions process. At St. John's, for example I suspect our director knew where everyone was getting in and had advocated on each child's behalf. Did someone at the school shepherd your application process and provide strategic advice?

Incorrect, PP - our DC's schools have been very gracious and helpful when applying out. Indeed, so much so that we stayed, despite getting into other schools. It's not uncommon for 8th graders to apply to other schools for 9th, etc.

Exactly. Yes, if your child is leaving your school because it's the end (3rd grade, 6th grade, 8th grade, whenever it ends), they will do all they can to help you place into a new school. If you are simply applying out because you'd rather go elsewhere next year, they won't help you. It's part of unspoken agreement between all of the independent schools.

Our k-8 meets with each independent school in the area that has applicants from our school (and does phone calls for those not in the area) to review the applicants. I think it's pretty standard for the larger K-8 schools. They do get notified of the status of each applicant so they can be prepared for March 2nd

I can understand not tipping off a school that has a student trying to leave early. But how about for ninth grade, from a public or private with no ninth grade? Would current school know?

I doubt this applies if the student is leaving for another school that competes with the existing school, correct? I can't see why the new school would tell our current school that DD was accepted but maybe I'm missing something.

Guarantee, they know or at least have a very good idea.
My theory is that if we haven't been called this week by DC's current school, with whom we've been working closely on this for the last 6 months, we are probably OK in assuming an acceptance to at least one or maybe two of our top picks. At least I hope so.
Wow, what school does this? River School? Seems like something only a very small yet high achieving private school could do for 3rd grade families applying out. I don't know why most current schools would have any reason to know this information, as their only contact with schools being applied to is generally with teacher recommendations (which were all due back in mid-January).
If it's 3rd grade outplacement (I can't find that reference), then they are likely referring to Beauvoir, which ends in 3rd grade and has someone devoted full time to handled outplacement.

I'm sure most k-8 schools do more than just send teacher recs. But who knows what they know and when?
