Really dying hair is not a fine art at all.

If you want to dye it very white, get one of the Clairol or the L'oreal lightest ash blonds with extra lightening or blondissimes (can't remember which one calls it that) which means there is bleaching in the dye.

put it on quick, wrap it in a plastic bag so the heat of the bleach works. After 40 mins rinse with cold water and then wash with shampoo and warm water, and then use the color fixing conditioner that comes with the kit. Its also a calming lotion.

I have never seen true white vs platinum blond but I would take him to a salon to avoid frying his hair. If money is an issue, try the Paul Mitchell school, though I personally would make him save up the money for it.

How about a gel, like this - they have the white? Less harsh on hair.

Eh. I'm not opposed to it, but it wouldn't be something I'd get involved in. If he felt like doing it, cool, he can figure out how to and live with the consequences if it isn't right.

PP here. DS has brown hair and wanted voodoo blue so we bleached first. Bleaching depends on what their hair color is now and how they want the color to look after. They have some videos and an FAQ on the site you should read. If they don't swim and they mostly wash their hair with cool water and not got should last a good 6-8 weeks. We then recolor but don't bleach again. We bleach about every 6 months when it has grown out.

I guess I'll go with a home kit. I'm afraid of pure peroxide. I tried do do my own hair once (same color - medium brown) and got orange.

That is why I would not try it. Its a fine art and very few people can do it well. I'd do another color with a kit someone else suggested if it were my son. I think the colors are fun (except around picture day but you can do pictures before you dye it). I would be concerned about using bleach on a young kid.

It is just hair and it will grow back.

I would do colors at home but would only do bleaching at a salon, especially since he wants to go white.

OP, tell him yes, at a salon only, and he has to pay for it.

If he really wants to dye it it he will find a way to earn the money.

But why say no to this? It is great that he asked before bleaching her good towels.

bleach it and then use toner to get any yellowness out. The first time should probably be at a salon though so you can see how he and his hair reacts to color treatments, any allergies, etc

Agree with 20:06. Take him to the salon. It will be cheaper to it right the first time

This is terrible advice. Don't struggle for power over the little things so that you can be firm about the big things.
