Both are nice, but I prefer Leila.

Leela in Sanskrit actually means miracle

Hindi and Sanskrit are 2 different languages. Play isn't meant like the activity of playing. Play meaning a story unfolding. A phrase often used is "Bhagvan ki Leela" meaning God's story.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'd want to name my kid something that means play.

Lila/Leela I associate as an Indian name.

Layla/Leyla/Leila- I associate with Eastern European (and Eric Clapton)

Both are beautiful names.

I also know an girl whose parents are from Azerbaijan named Leyli/Laylee (don't know the exact spelling), which also sounds pretty.

Layla if you like Eric Clapton a lot. Leila or Leyla are pretty spellings, in my opinion. Leela as other PPs have mentioned is often used by Indians.

Dislike both. Both will be pronounced and spelled wrong by people for decades. I just wouldn't do that to a kid, especially for a name that seems ... meh.
