Do it. Don't linger, but introduce yourself, and leave your number. 75% of people will appreciate it, and those who don't have the problem, not you.

When I moved into my neighborhood and a couple neighbors wandered up to say hello, I really appreciated it. A month later, when I had a baby, my next door neighbor gave us a houseplant and nice card, which I also appreciated.

And yes, we call our neighbors for help, and help then. Locked out of the house, need a cup of flour, looking for a lost pet, etc. We also get coffee together, watch each others kids, drink beers together on summer afternoons, shovel out each others cars. It's great.

Once you introduce yourself to neighbors, they often become something called "friends" (google it).

Friends are happy to help each other, and they don't even charge you!

Yes, we have! And they have called us too. That's the nice part about knowing neighbors- you don't need to be BFFs but polite and nice. It's great when you have an emergency.

+2 Glad my neighborhood in N Arl is friendly. Everyone introduces themselves when new people move in. We even have an annual block party. I love it!

Yes! A simple "hello, my name is..." and a short chat goes such a long way for getting along with neighbors, especially meet your next door neighbors and in front. If you're shy, just make yourself do it and get it over with.

Please don't listen to that person. She's a miserable soul and in the tiny minority -- most DCUMers would love to know their neighbors, they're just afraid because of the occasional pill like PP.

Introduce yourself. Bring flowers or cookies or whatever warms your heart. Be authentic. I've met two lifelong friends that way, and it certainly makes coming home nicer.

I didn't mean to sound snarky- sorry! Ok, yes, introduce yourself to them. Just pop in and say Hi my name is.... nice to meet you. I feel it would be weird to not know your immediate neighbors. In my well established neighborhood, we had several people come by and say hi, or say hi when we were out and unloading the car. It was very nice.

No worries, I didn't read snark into it at all. I also think it's weird not to know your immediate neighbors, since everyone seems to assume we do (especially daycare either their "local contact rule"). On the other hand, I've never known my neighbors, so I guess that's my "normal".

Yes, do it. I moved not long ago and really liked it when a couple of our neighbor's did so. I like PPs idea of giving the written contact info.
