A Forever Home has a good selection of older dogs.

Look for a hound mix. Our hound is the best family dog ever! He's kind, patient, gentle, loves children and has matured quite well since we adopted him at age 1. He no longer digs or chews - another plus for not getting a young dog. We found him through an email and had him transported from a rural GA shelter. Probably not something you're interested in, but I can help you find the perfect dog if you're interested as I have rescue connections.

Homeward Trails is a great group that brings up dogs from rural shelters in the south. Most dogs will come to you from a foster situation so you will get some info on temperament. We adopted from them and got a lot of support. The PG county shelter has so, so many dogs of all breeds. They are very overlooked by adopters and have a high euthansia rate. Owner give ups get the needle in three days. It's alos a good place to look.

I forgot to add the pits are attacking in crestwood among other spots. Mayor lives there. Even if the beasts are on leash a strong dog can pull away from all but the strongest male.

Grreat.org Golden retriever rescue. We have had two wonderful adult dogs from there who needed to be rehomed.

Washington Animal Rescue League. Virtually every dog in my neighborhood was adopted there. No pits or very few. My first beagle is from there.
