PPs are kind of alarmist. If it's a yeast infection, you can try a small amount of Lotrimin. Make sure she dries well after peeing, eat lots of yogurt, take culturelle. A friend of mine had a UTI and said there is an OTC test for it. You could try that. It could also be psychological. If you just moved, she might be feeling insecure, and is regressing and having pee accidents. I agree with PP to not use soap in the bath. You can sprinkle a little baking soda in the bath water. I thought my DD had some sort of infection, but when the doctor looked she said it looked normal. Best to get it checked out but don't freak based on internet advice.

Another NP here, and I can so relate to this. It's awful. my DD had the same problem when she was in pre-K, about age 3.5-4years old. I had to take her to the doctor multiple times because her vaginal area was so red and inflamed and she would also itch and touch down there.

It almost looked like there was a red line of demarcation right around her vulva (sorry if TMI), and again, there was often a sort of cheesy/sour pungent smell in that area too. Since she was touching herself, we could smell it on her hands, and didn't want her to touch eyes, mouth, etc.

She is now 7, and the problem has completely stopped. I think it is due to several reasons: (1) not wiping well when they pee or go #2. (2) sensitive skin/allergies. Try washing her clothes/undergarments in scent-free detergent, like Tide or All Free. (3) do not ever soap your little girl down there during bathtime, can also throw the ph off. No bubble bath. Only bathe in a very mild/gentle soap like Ivory and make sure she is rinsed/showered off completely afterward.

Our pediatrician also gave us a very mild antifungal, Nystatin (same one used when women have thrush and are breastfeeding to put on their breasts...safe for babies mouths, safe for DD's privates).

We were instructed to wash her bottom every night and make sure it is completely dry before we put on the medication and pajamas. Also, no underwear at night. To this day, she still doesn't wear udnerpants at night. Let her skin breathe.

Now that she is older and can wipe better and we follow the protocol, we haven't had an issue. FWIW, DD still has very sensitive skin and gets severe eczema and other issues, so some kids seem more prone to this.

NP here. When I was that age, I didn't wipe (pee) and that often caused irritation. I was always in a hurry to go out and play!

The other thing is the brand of toilet paper could be irritating her. There are a few brands that irritate me, even as an adult. It's not just the scratchiness of the TP, it's what chemicals they use in making the toilet paper. Think about it; TP is complicated: it has to hold up to being wet and being wiped around, but not be so strong as to not fall apart when in the water so as to clog up the toilet. Also chemicals to get it bleached white.

True, but urgent care only has a certain number of appointments per day and some days they fill up quickly

Also important to see a pediatric MD or NP to rule out the possibility of sexual abuse.

I used to put the desitin on my DD when she had a little irritation (even when she was 5-8 yrs. old). That seemed to solve the problem every time.

If it proves not to be a UTI or yeast infection, I've had great luck in treating minor irritations with the burt's bees multipurpose ointment for all 3 of my kids and myself.

We like Virginia Pediatric Group; we go to the Fairfax (near Mosaic) location, but there are other locations. Hope your little girl feels better.
