Birdseed also works well. You can get it at animal feed stores inexpensively and some hardware stores for more.

Cat litter is clay, and turns to mud. Sand stays sand. It washes away eventually.

OP, try to do without. If things ice up tomorrow, then spread some sand for traction. Better safe than sorry.

salt will ruin a new driveway. I have stopped putting salt on anything.

Salt is horrible. Kills the grass too. Just let them shovel. No sand either.
