MLM = Multi-Level Marketing

I.e. Ponzi Scheme.

A major characteristic of them is telling people that if your daughter won't host a party for you, they're being unsupportive of your efforts to run your "business." Very cultish. Depends on the product -- some worse than others.

Anonymous wrote:A couple years back my mom got involved with an mlm company. She was pretty evangelical about it for a while but I had no problem telling her I wasn't interested. I occasionally buy stuff from her but not regularly. Anyway she has asked me in the past to host a party for her and invite my friends. I demurred but she's been pushing harder lately. I just don't know how to tell her how I feel about it. On the one hand I would do anything for my mom, but not this. I don't know. Am I wrong? She gets very prickly. And has invested too much effort to about face and drop the whole thing. Bonus points if you can give me advice to help her ease out of it.

Just send her this link:

Firm, direct and to the point:

"Mom, selling this stuff is YOUR job, not mine. If I decide I want to start selling it, I'll let you know. I am not hosting a party aimed at selling things. This is the last conversation I'm going to have about this."

I mean my instinct is to take a hard line but I don't think it's going to change things other than damage our relationship.

I dunno. You've told her you were against it from the start, yet you buy the crap. Of COURSE it's overpriced. Someone higher up the food chain is feeding off of your mother.

"I've asked around to gauge interest, Mom but my friends don't want to do that stuff. I can't get enough of an audience to even make it worth your while. I know this is a big thing for you and I'm sorry my group isn't more receptive"

"Mom, I really don't feel comfortable hosting this kind of party. I know my friends don't like them, and I don't want them to feel obligated or uncomfortable. I'm glad you enjoy this sales business, but I'm not going to host a party."

I say no to everyone. It runs off friendships.
